Origin

Native to the eastern edge of the Great African Plateau, from South Africa to Ethiopia and west to the Congo

Uses

Staple food for about 20 million people in Ethiopia, ornamental plant, medicinal fruit pulp, vegetable young shoots and flowering part

Growing conditions

Full sun or partial shade, humus-rich soil, frost-free area

Care

Water regularly, feed with nitrogen-rich fertilizer, remove dead leaves, protect from strong winds

Overwintering

In colder months, move plants to a large pot under glass or to a temperate greenhouse. In southern regions, wrap plants with horticultural fleece and mulch with well-rotted manure or compost.
